Sunday Reflection: The Body and Blood of Resistance
This Sunday the Roman Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of Corpus Christi, the Body and Blood of Christ.  The gospel is taken from Mark 14, the account of the Last Supper.  In Mark’s gospel, Jesus of Nazareth is portrayed as the Son of Man, the Suffering Servant who would suffer and die for the cause of the people. In Mark’s account of the Last Supper, Jesus of Nazareth thematically embraced his identity as a rabbi engaged in the Resistance against the Empire. This week’s reflection will focus in how Jesus’ mission of resistance was shaped by the Passover narrative and the socio-historical context of Roman Occupation.

The Passover draws upon the narrative of the Exodus, a politically charged holiday that attracted large crowds to Jerusalem.  The Passover narrative of slaves resisting the Egyptian Empire resonated with many people who saw their own enslavement under the Roman Empire.  The theme of Resistance in Passover was a challenge to the Jews who benefitted from the Roman Empire (the chief priests and scribes) and those who chose to “get along” as best they could with the Empire (the old or pre-Destruction of the Temple Sanhedrin, Sadducees and the Jerusalem-based Pharisee rabbis).  The Passover theme was connected to other festivals in the mid-late Spring (e.g., Shava’ot, Festival of Booths, etc.) and many people were coming into Jerusalem with Resistance on their minds and because of this, the Passover was not merely a challenge, but a threat to the Empire.  The Romans beefed up security in Jerusalem because they knew that the Passover narrative was being “politicized” by conflating the Egyptian oppression with the Roman occupation. 

When Jews were forced out of Jerusalem by the Empire, the Seder was established so that all Jews wherever they were living would be able to connect to the story of Israel’s liberation. This was definitely not “politicization,” but rather solid Jewish practice. The Seder intentionally links the narrative Jewish Resistance under Pharaoh to the aspirations for freedom of all peoples, in all lands, inclusive of other religions. Today there are hundreds, if not thousands, of Seder interpretations that touch on many topical issues: the Farm Workers and the UFW, Black Lives Matter, LGBTQ liberation, Hotel Workers, etc., are only a few examples that it is certainly within Jewish tradition to contemporize the Seder.

In the early CE, the Passover was dominated by the theme of blood sacrifice in which a lamb would be brought to the Temple for a ritual sacrifice. The family would get the body of the lamb back and they would roast it and serve it at a festive meal in the home.  (Christians should note of the literary theme that identifies Christ as the “Lamb of God,” to be sacrificed at Passover. c.f., Johannine theology, Revelation, and Hebrews ).  Keep in mind that at 33 CE there was not a fixed Seder celebration. In fact, the Passover was only celebrated in Jerusalem up until 70 CE when the Temple was destroyed. Mark’s gospel appears to have been written in 70 CE. At the time of authorship the Haggadah (a fixed order with prescribed rituals for the Seder) was not yet established, but Mark’s gospel suggests that Jesus (and presumably other rabbis of his generation) had already begun the process of contextualizing the Passover theme within lived experience of political repression under the Roman Empire.

Turning specifically to Mark’s account of Jesus we find that when Jesus takes the bread, he says the blessing and identifies the bread with his own body.  When he did that, Jesus politicized the Passover narrative. Every Jewish meal always begins with the prayer over the breaking of bread.  The prayer most likely used was an ancient blessing, “Baruch ata Adonai, Eloheinu Melech ha’olam, hamotzi lechem, min ha aretz. (Blessed are You, O LORD our God, King of the Universe, Who has brought forth bread from the earth).” From very early on, Jewish scholars commented on the significance of bread. The deeper significance of bread is rooted in blessing God for the bread that was made through human labor. Turning to a contemporary Jewish scholar, Rabbi Lawrence A. Hoffman (see The Way Into Jewish Prayer), who surveyed commentaries on the meaning behind the prayers over the bread, we see that rabbis early on had differing opinions on the meaning behind the blessing.  The minority position was that the prayer was a thanksgiving to God and a faith statement of hope: that one day human beings will be freed from the laborious effort of making bread and that one day the human family will be returned to the condition of receiving bread directly from God and not from human hands. (Christian believers should immediately call to mind Jesus’ Bread of Life discourses in John 6.  “I AM the bread come down from heaven…”).  The majority opinion (and the current option of most Jewish scholars) is that the prayer refers to the daily bread (the bread that we hold in our hands, not specifically the Passover bread which is unleavened and only flour and water — like the hosts used in Catholic liturgy) and that the prayer is a statement of faith that one day all people will have enough to eat and be freed from the arduous labor required for the people to put bread (and by extension all food) on their table.

From what we can take from the gospel of Mark is that Jesus as a Resistance-oriented rabbi identified himself both as the bread at Passover and the bread of labor. Jesus identified his words and actions about resisting the Empire (which is associated with the work of sowing the grain, watering it, harvesting and milling it into flour, and kneading the flour with water (and yeast and oil if the bread is not Passover bread). The labor of making bread becomes a metaphor for Jesus calling his disciples, forming them, challenging them and making them into the bread of life, that is, his Body (Body of Christ). When Jesus says, “This is my body,” he says this in reference to the actual matzot (the unleavened Passover bread that he holds in his hands, that is to say, his body is the Bread of Affliction associated with the Hebrew people who were once enslaved by Egypt and now commemorated in the Passover meal.  Bread in the Christian ritual context of the mass would be interpreted as, “Bread for the Journey.” Christians see Christ as accompanying them in the process of living into freedom in a similar way the People Israel might have seen the manna in the desert. 

The second dimension in identifying his body with the Passover bread is Jesus-as-the-Christ embodying the Resistance.  Jesus resistance to the Empire is associated with Moses resistance to the Egyptian Empire. Mark brilliantly uses this connection to illustrate to second and third generation Christians that the Passover narrative of Resistance is the primary interpretive lens for Jesus’ identity and for the renewal movement that eventually became known as “Christianity.” Now we turn to Jesus’ comment about his blood being associated with the Passover wine.

The dominant Passover theme of sacrifice is preserved with Mark’s portrayal of Jesus as the Son of Man, the Suffering Servant) in the reference to the wine: “This is my blood which will be shed for many.” Jesus connects his blood with the wine and with the covenant.  Moses ratified the covenant of the Law by blood (c.f., Exodus 24:1-8 and Zechariah 9:11). In Mark’s gospel Jesus is not suggesting a new covenant, but rather a ratification of the already existing covenant, also, Mark does not add the line, “…for the forgiveness of sins,” as in other references (i.e., Matthew, 1 Corinthians, Hebrews and 1 Peter).  Mark’s gospel does not spiritualize or add additional meanings to the traditional Jewish Passover focus in which wine is symbolic of the blood of the Jews who labored as slaves and the blood of the Resistance. By connecting his blood to the blood that ratified the Law and the blood of those who died in the Resistance, Jesus bid his disciples to make a commitment to the ongoing work of resisting the Empire. Jesus’ closing comment, “I shall not drink again the fruit of the vine until the day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God,” shows his belief that the Passover wine not only signifies the sorrow of loss, but also signals hope that one day the Empire will end and that people will be free. 

While many Catholics will celebrate the feast of Corpus Christi with Eucharistic adoration and processions, we must not forget the social, political and historical context of the Last Supper narrative. Undoubtedly some homilists may choose to focus on the scholastic arguments for Transubstantiation and Real Presence, but the intent behind this edition’s reflection is to challenge preachers and congregants to temper their ritual enthusiasm of Corpus Christi by diving deep into the actual text and join the centuries old conversation of Resistance and Freedom.

Este domingo, la Iglesia Católica Romana celebra la Fiesta del Corpus Christi, el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo. El evangelio está tomado de Marcos 14, el relato de la Última Cena. En el evangelio de Marcos, Jesús de Nazaret es retratado como el Hijo del Hombre, el Siervo Sufriente que sufriría y moriría por la causa de la gente. En el relato de Marcos sobre la Última Cena, Jesús de Nazaret abrazó temáticamente su identidad como un rabino comprometido con la Resistencia contra el Imperio. La reflexión de esta semana se centrará en cómo la misión de resistencia de Jesús fue moldeada por la narrativa de la Pascua y el contexto sociohistórico de la ocupación romana.

La Pascua se basa en la narración del Éxodo, una fiesta políticamente cargada que atrajo a grandes multitudes a Jerusalén. La narración de la Pascua de los esclavos que resistieron al Imperio egipcio resonó con muchas personas que vieron su propia esclavitud bajo el Imperio Romano. Los romanos reforzaron la seguridad en Jerusalén porque sabían que la narración de la Pascua estaba siendo “politizada” al conectar la opresión egipcia con la ocupación romana.

Cuando el Imperio expulsó a los judíos de Jerusalén, el Seder se estableció para que todos los judíos, dondequiera que estuvieran, pudieran conectarse con la historia de la liberación de Israel. Esto definitivamente no fue una “politización”, sino una sólida práctica judía. El Seder vincula intencionalmente la narrativa Resistencia Judía bajo el Faraón a las aspiraciones de libertad de todos los pueblos, en todas las tierras, incluidas otras religiones. Hoy hay cientos, sino miles, de interpretaciones del Seder que tocan muchos temas de actualidad: los trabajadores agrícolas y el UFW, Black Lives Matter, liberación de LGBTQ, trabajadores del hotel, etc., son solo algunos ejemplos de que ciertamente tradición de actualizar el Seder.

En los primeros años EC, la Pascua estaba dominada por el tema del sacrificio de sangre en el que un cordero sería llevado al Templo para un sacrificio ritual. La familia recuperaría el cuerpo del cordero y lo asarían y lo servirían en una comida festiva en el hogar. (Los cristianos deben tener en cuenta el tema literario que identifica a Cristo como el “Cordero de Dios”, para ser sacrificado en la Pascua. c.f., la teología del evangelio de S Juan, el Apocalipsis y Hebreos). Tenga en cuenta que a los 33 CE no había una celebración fija del Seder. De hecho, la Pascua solo se celebró en Jerusalén hasta el 70 EC cuando el Templo fue destruido. El evangelio de Marcos parece haber sido escrito en el 70 EC. En el momento de la autoría, la Hagadá (una orden fija con rituales prescritos para el Seder) aún no estaba establecida, pero el evangelio de Marcos sugiere que Jesús (y presumiblemente otros rabinos de su generación) ya habían comenzado el proceso de contextualizar el tema de la Pascua dentro de experiencia de represión política bajo el Imperio Romano.

Volviendo específicamente al relato de Marcos sobre Jesús, encontramos que cuando Jesús toma el pan, dice la bendición e identifica el pan con su propio cuerpo. Cuando hizo eso, Jesús politizó la narración de la Pascua. Cada comida judía siempre comienza con la oración por la fracción del pan. La oración que probablemente se usó fue una antigua bendición, “Baruch ata Adonai, Eloheinu Melech ha’olam, hamotzi lechem, min ha aretz. (Bendito eres, oh SEÑOR nuestro Dios, Rey del Universo, Quien ha sacado el pan del tierra). “Desde muy temprano, los eruditos judíos comentaron sobre la importancia del pan. El significado más profundo del pan está arraigado en la bendición de Dios por el pan que se hizo mediante el trabajo humano. Dirigiéndose a un erudito judío contemporáneo, el rabino Lawrence A. Hoffman (ver El Camino a la Oración Judía), que encuestó comentarios sobre el significado detrás de las oraciones sobre el pan, vemos que los rabinos tenían opiniones diferentes sobre el significado de la bendición. La posición minoritaria fue que la oración fue una acción de gracias a Dios y una declaración de esperanza de fe: que algún día los seres humanos serán liberados del esfuerzo laborioso de hacer pan y que un día la familia humana será devuelta a la condición de recibir pan directamente de Dios y no de manos humanas. (Los creyentes cristianos deben recordar inmediatamente los discursos sobre el pan de vida de Jesús en Juan 6. “YO SOY el pan bajado del cielo …”). La opinión mayoritaria (y la opción actual de la mayoría de los eruditos judíos) es que la oración se refiere al pan de cada día (el pan que tenemos en nuestras manos, no específicamente el pan de la Pascua que es sin levadura y solo harina y agua, como las hostias utilizadas en la liturgia católica) y que la oración es una declaración de fe de que un día todas las personas tendrán suficiente para comer y ser liberadas del arduo trabajo requerido para que la gente ponga pan (y por extensión toda la comida) en su mesa.

De lo que podemos tomar del evangelio de Marcos es que Jesús, como rabino orientado a la Resistencia, se identificó a sí mismo como el pan en la Pascua y el pan de trabajo. Jesús identificó sus palabras y acciones para resistir al Imperio (que está asociado con el trabajo de sembrar el grano, regarlo, cosecharlo y molerlo en harina, y amasar la harina con agua (y levadura y aceite si el pan no es pan de Pascua) ) El trabajo de hacer pan se convierte en una metáfora de Jesús llamando a sus discípulos, formándolos, desafiándolos y convirtiéndolos en el pan de vida, es decir, su Cuerpo (Cuerpo de Cristo). Cuando Jesús dice: “Este es mi cuerpo”, Dice esto en referencia a la matzot real (el pan de la Pascua sin levadura que sostiene en sus manos, es decir, su cuerpo es el Pan de aflicción asociado con el pueblo hebreo que una vez fueron esclavizados por Egipto y ahora se conmemora en El pan en el contexto ritual cristiano de la misa sería interpretado como “Pan para el camino”. Los cristianos ven a Cristo como acompañante en el proceso de vivir en libertad de manera similar que el pueblo de Israel pudo haber visto el maná en el desierto.

La segunda dimensión al identificar su cuerpo con el pan de la Pascua es Jesús-como-Cristo encarnando la Resistencia. La resistencia de Jesús al Imperio está asociada con la resistencia de Moisés al Imperio Egipcio. Marcos utiliza brillantemente esta conexión para ilustrar a cristianos de segunda y tercera generación que la narración de Resistencia de la Pascua es la principal lente interpretativa para la identidad de Jesús y para el movimiento de renovación que finalmente se conoció como “cristianismo”. Ahora volvemos al comentario de Jesús sobre su sangre está asociada con el vino de Pascua.

El tema dominante del sacrificio de la Pascua se conserva con la descripción de Marcos de Jesús como el Hijo del Hombre, el Siervo Sufriente) en la referencia al vino: “Esta es mi sangre que será derramada por muchos”. Jesús conecta su sangre con el vino y con el pacto. Moisés ratificó el pacto de la Ley por sangre (c.f., Éxodo 24: 1-8 y Zacarías 9:11). En el evangelio de Marcos, Jesús no está sugiriendo un nuevo mandamiento, sino una ratificación del mandamiento ya existente, y Marcos no agrega la frase “… para el perdón de los pecados”, como en otras referencias (es decir, Mateo, 1 Corintios , Hebreos y 1 Pedro). El evangelio de Marcos no espiritualiza ni agrega significados adicionales al enfoque tradicional de la pascua judía en el cual el vino es simbólico de la sangre de los judíos que trabajaron como esclavos y la sangre de la Resistencia. Al conectar su sangre a la sangre que ratificó la Ley y la sangre de aquellos que murieron en la Resistencia, Jesús les pidió a sus discípulos que se comprometieran con el trabajo continuo de resistencia al Imperio. El comentario final de Jesús, “No volveré a beber el fruto de la vid hasta el día en que beba lo nuevo en el reino de Dios”, muestra su creencia de que el vino de la Pascua no solo significa el dolor de la pérdida, sino que también que un día el Imperio terminará y que las personas serán libres.

Mientras que muchos católicos celebrarán la fiesta del Corpus Christi con adoración eucarística y procesiones, no debemos olvidar el contexto social, político e histórico de la narración de la Última Cena. Sin duda, algunos predicadores pueden optar por centrarse en los argumentos escolásticos de la transubstanciación y la presencia real, pero la intención detrás de la reflexión de esta edición es desafiar a los predicadores y congregantes a templar su entusiasmo ritual de Corpus Christi buceando profundamente en el texto actual y unirse a los siglos de antigüedad conversación de Resistencia y Libertad.
