Sunday Reflection: The Great Commission
Sunday is the Feast of the Holy Trinity and the Gospel is drawn from “The Great Commission” from Matthew 28:16-20.  This passage, when read without regard to the full context of Matthew’s gospel would give the impression that Jesus is calling for a membership drive for his new Church. Today’s reflection will do two things: using the lens of Resistance, it will contextualize the passage within a proper framework permitting a more accurate understanding of what Jesus called for when he said, “…make disciples of all nations…” and secondly will show how an uncritical reading of the gospels (specifically this passage) has given rise to a faulty or distorted theology that tragically provided the “apologia” for centuries of anti-Semitism.

Let us look at the text: the Great Commission takes place soon after the Resurrection. Mary Magadalene and the other Mary were at the tomb, presumably to prepare the body for burial. In Matthew’s gospel there was a great earthquake, the stone rolled away and an angel sat upon the stone.  The Hebrew word for “angel,” is “mal’ach,” means messenger and in Jewish mystical traditions angels are like “metaphysical energy bundles.” (Some of these Jewish mystics believed that angels also communicated positive thoughts and “energies” upwards to God).  An earthquake would be seen not simply as a natural phenomenon, but a sign of redemption. The Talmud speaks of a time when the Messiah will redeem the people. When Jesus spoke previously about destroying the Temple and raising it up in three days in reference to his impending arrest, torture and execution, there was some confusion on the religious authority’s part (and disciple’s part too!) because they interpreted his words in reference to a political act of violence, meaning that Jesus was advocating for a total restructuring of the religious identity. While such an interpretation may have some small measure of validity, we should supplement our understanding by turning to the Talmud.

When we examine the Talmudic reference to earthquake, we find that the same three Hebrew letters for “ra’ash,” meaning collapsing the gate — that is, “earthquake,” is also found, when re-arranged to mean “sha’ar,” or “gate.”  The gate women came to what was to be the literal gate of Jesus death, the tomb. This gate to the netherworld collapsed and an angel sitting upon it giving them the message, “Do not be afraid! I know that you are seeking Jesus the crucified. He is not here, for he has been raised just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples, ‘He has been raised from the dead, and he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him.’ Behold, I have told you.” The message from God was that the gate to death has been destroyed and your faith is strong!  You believe that he is indeed risen! So, the women went back and along the way they met the Risen Christ who reiterated the message, “Do not be afraid. Go tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and they will see me.”  Of course these two witnesses went to report this to their male counterparts. The disciples return to Galilee and there they encountered Jesus. 

In between the women’s testimony and going to Galilee, the narrative is broken up by verses 11-15 that provide an important context of the Resurrection: the ambient political climate of the Empire and Jewish Resistance. The passage addresses the question of “real politik.”  The Empire will destroy all people if those in power knew that God himself had intervened on behalf of the Resistance, therefore, knowledge of the Resurrection would have to be suppressed. The religious authorities based in Jerusalem, did not want political disruption and so they needed the question of Jesus of Nazareth’s resurrection to go away.  They needed the  governor to believe things were “on track” and that the issue of Resistance was put to rest with lying Jesus in the tomb. For that to happen, the religious authorities needed the people on the street to believe that the Resistance movement associated with the Jesus of Nazareth ended with Jesus’ death.

Presumably the disciples were keenly aware of this political reality which is why they harbored doubt, even as they saw Jesus stand before them.  (n.b., verse 17), “When they saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted.” The doubt was not about the fact of Jesus’ resurrection, but rather the self-doubt within themselves. Would the disciples have the strength to actually stand up to the Empire? Would they be able to baptize the people in the ethics of radical inclusion and economic justice in the name of Jesus-as-the-Christ? Would the disciples be able to withstand his same fate? 

The disciples only worshipped Jesus as first because they were uncertain as to whether they would be able to do anything more than simply remain in reverie over Jesus’ presence in their midst.  Jesus had to break this line of thinking. His response to their doubt, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”  Jesus was breaking them away from a privatized spirituality of adoration into a spirituality of collective commitment to the world.

Reading today’s passage through the lens of Resistance gives us a deeper understanding of the power of the Great Commission. Even though this passage is frequently used as a text for the Liturgy of Baptism, the emphasis is not on initiation or Church membership, but on the mission. This text has also been used as “proof texting” for explaining the Holy Trinity.  Jesus tied the Great Commission to the Father, Son and holy Spirit to underscore the Great Commission not to make a theological statement about God.  Jesus-as-the-Christ prayed and the object of his prayer was to the Father. Jesus-as-the-Christ’s relationship with the Father was an immediate, affectionate and deeply personal relationship. God the Father was not an abstract concept. Not using the more traditional references to God like, The Holy Name, The Eternal, The Merciful, etc., Jesus chose a title that was truly scalable to the human experience: a loving parent. In earlier editions of the Communique we have explored the relationship of Jesus-as-the-Christ in reference to the holy Spirit. The Spirit, Ruach, is literally “breath” according to Hebrew. In the Gospel of Matthew Ruach led Jesus from the waters of his baptism into the desert and so too Ruach will lead the disciples into the unknown future. It should be clear that the Trinitarian reference in verse 19 cannot be used as “proof” of a dogma about God that was yet to be formalized for another 300 years. Having said that, it is fundamentally important that Christians understand about the nature of the God they worship and how their relationship with the person of Jesus form an understanding of how they as believers should act in the world around them.  Good theology shapes our Christian practice and sustains our mission in the world. Distorted theology results in social and political chaos.

We now turn to the second part of this week’s reflection: the problem of reading the gospels (specifically this passage) with an ahistorical and uncritical lens. The Late Second and Mid-third Century heretics were non-Jewish Christians who had difficulty understanding “The Word became Flesh.”  We cannot say these Greek-speaking Christians were unfamiliar with the concept of the Incarnation because many pagan religions had mythologies of deities taking on human flesh or being half-human/half-deity. The problem with the Greek-speaking Christians was that they had an incomplete understanding of the intrinsic relationship of Jesus as a human person and Jesus being Jewish. 

As Christianity moved further and further away from its original Jewish social context, non-Jews and those who had no contact with the Judaism did not understand the Jewish references in the gospel narratives. The Jewish reference points (roughly categorized) are: the theology of God, (including the final judgement and the afterlife, and peoplehood); social thought (the ethics of caring for the community and healing the world), history and society (how the Jewish people came to be and who they were in relationship to other communities around them), and spirituality (a wide variety of concerns regarding prayer, liturgy, and being present to God). These four reference points provided numerous invaluable nuances that helped the first Christians understand the dual realities of Jesus: that Jesus was fully human and fully Divine. Losing the Jewish context of Christianity and not having social contact with Jews allowed Christians to see Judaism to be merely forerunner to Christianity.  The Hebrew Scriptures were used as “proof texts” for the birth, life and death of Jesus and thus Judaism came to be seen as a redundant religion that was replaced by Christianity.  This is called “supersessionism”.

Rooted in a gross misreading of the gospels, supersessionism is a theology of replacement in which Christianity becomes the new and improved religion rendering the Jewish religion irrelevant and the Jewish people perfidious and stubborn.  The evangelist Matthew creates a parallel between Jesus and Moses and many ill-informed Christian scholars interpreted Matthew’s typology as a both an intended historical event in which Jesus takes on the identity as the “New Moses” (Jesus gives the law and therefore Jesus “supersedes” Moses). Scholars who failed to catch the nuances and references to Jewish antecedents, would  be led to conclude that Jesus replaced Moses and therefore Moses — and the Torah (and by extension the Prophets) have very little to say to Christians, other than to affirm Jesus’ place in salvation history.  This line of thinking had dire consequences throughout Christian history.

The theological frame of “replacement” has provided a religious pretext for anti-Semitic politics and actions. Around the 4th Century, soon after Emperor Constantine “converted” to Christianity and gave Christianity a preferred status among other religions in the Roman Empire. It was around this time that the term “God Killer” was applied toward Jews. During this same time Constantine forbid Jews to own Christian slaves or to circumcise their slaves and their religious services were regulated and the synagogue congregations were restricted. Christians were forbidden to convert to Judaism. In the 5th Century discrimination got worse: synagogues were destroyed or made to fall into disrepair and the civic engagement of Jews was restricted even more than in previous years. By the 11th century Jews were persecuted on a regular basis and the mythology of Jews possessing magical powers and having a pact with the devil circulated throughout Northern Europe.  11th and 12th Century Crusades in Germany and France were supposed to lift up Christians, inspiring them to join the war effort in the Holy Land to reclaim territory that had fallen under the control of Islamic forces.  Rather than using the message of Jesus, anti-Semitic clergy stirred their congregations to wipe out Jewish populations along the Rhine, and Danube. In the 13th — 15th Centuries Jews were killed by the thousands and they were expelled from Germany, France, Austria and England. Many of those expelled fled to Poland and other parts of Eastern Europe. Anti-Semitic rhetoric blasted from the pulpits gave rise to anti-semitic politics. Poor theology and popular piety replaced scholarship and many sermons instigated the unlettered population to blame Jews for the Bubonic Plague (AKA, “The Black Death”). Most medieval preachers and scholars’ minds were filled with supersessionist theology and for them, scapegoating the Jews was much easier than addressing the horrific living conditions of the poor. (As an aside reflection, one can only imagine what our history would have been like had preachers challenged the nobility to truly care for the masses or poor people.  Imagine if the nobility was motivated to provide clean streets, dignified housing, and potable water. History would look much different today).

By the 18th and 19th Centuries the Jews who had long established their lives in Russia and Eastern Europe after fleeing Western Europe centuries prior, found themselves in grave peril. “Pogroms,” the systematic violent attacks against Jews, their property and synagogues began. These pogroms swept across Russia, Poland, Lithuania and Ukraine and yes, the theology of Supersessionism gave monarchs, bishops and clergy the license to carry out these violent acts in the name of Jesus. 

The long and horrific history of Christian attacks against Jews paved the way for the massive genocide against Jews, the Holocaust.  It was not a surprise that Christians who had been bathed in Supersessionism for centuries saw no conflict between their Christian faith and the annihilation of Jews. In 1933 Germany Christians demanded that the Hebrew Scriptures (The First Testament) be torn out from the bible. This act, of course, ignited a Resistance Movement among the Christian intellectual class and they formed a “Confessing Church” that asserted Christ, not the Führer, was the head of the church.  Sadly, the Confessing Church attracted a mere 20% of German pastors. Only after the end of WWII did the majority of European Christian theologians begin to re-evaluate the theology of Supersessionism.  They took a long and serious look at the Confessing Church, Ecumenical Studies and Inter-religious dialog. From the 1960s onward, Christians, led by the Catholic Church, began to shift their Supersessionist theological frame to a more nuanced reading of the Gospels and the letters of St. Paul. Today Jewish and Christian dialog is vibrant and non-violent; however, over the past few years, the White Evangelical churches and seminaries have seen a resurgence of Supersessionist thinking and the Southern Poverty Law Center has reported a number of White Supremacist churches have sprung up using anti-Semitic and anti-Islamic language, calling for a purging of America. Anti-Semitic incidents, according the Anti-Defamation League, have increased 60% from 2016-2017.  It seems as if we took a step back from inter-religious progress.

The solution to extracting anti-Semitism from our academic and spiritual life requires: a positive and consistent exposure to Jewish people, Jewish theology and Jewish spirituality as well as a rigorous commitment to Scripture scholarship that is does not treat the Hebrew Scriptures as mere “proof text” for Jesus.  As Christians we must reaffirm the Dogma of the Most Holy Trinity because the dogma of the Trinity grounds us in understanding God in the unfolding narrative of salvation history which cannot be separated from the history of Jewish  peoplehood. And lastly, we must commit ourselves to challenge other “Christians” who continue to speak of Jews and other religions in an inferior manner.

El domingo es la Fiesta de la Santísima Trinidad y el Evangelio proviene de “La Gran Comisión” de Mateo 28: 16-20. Este pasaje, cuando se lee sin tener en cuenta el contexto completo del evangelio de Mateo, daría la impresión de que Jesús está llamando a una campaña de membresía para su nueva Iglesia. La reflexión de hoy hará dos cosas: usando el lente de la Resistencia, contextualizará el pasaje dentro de un marco adecuado que permita una comprensión más precisa de lo que Jesús pidió cuando dijo: “… hagan discípulos de todas las naciones …” y en segundo lugar mostrará cómo una lectura acrítica de los evangelios (específicamente este pasaje) ha dado lugar a una teología defectuosa o distorsionada que proporcionó trágicamente la “apología” durante siglos de antisemitismo.

Miremos el texto: la Gran Comisión tiene lugar poco después de la Resurrección. Mary Magadalene y la otra María estaban en la tumba, presumiblemente para preparar el cuerpo para el entierro. Porque interpretaron sus palabras en referencia a un acto político de violencia, lo que significa que Jesús abogaba por una reestructuración total de la identidad religiosa. Si bien dicha interpretación puede tener una pequeña medida de validez, debemos complementar nuestra comprensión recurriendo al Talmud.

Cuando examinamos la referencia talmúdica al terremoto, encontramos que las mismas tres letras hebreas para “ra’ash“, que significa colapsando la puerta, es decir, “terremoto”, también se encuentran, cuando se reorganizan para significar “sha’ar” , o “la puerta “.  Las mujeres de la puerta llegaron a lo que iba a ser la puerta literal de la muerte de Jesús: la tumba. Esta puerta al inframundo colapsó y un ángel sentado sobre ella les dio el mensaje: “¡No tengan miedo! Sé que estás buscando a Jesús crucificado. Él no está aquí, porque ha sido criado justo como él dijo. Ven y mira el lugar donde yació. Luego ve rápido y dile a sus discípulos: ‘Él ha resucitado de entre los muertos, y va delante de ti a Galilea; allí lo verán. “He aquí, te lo he dicho”. El mensaje de Dios fue que la puerta de la muerte ha sido destruida y tu fe es fuerte! ¡Usted cree que de hecho ha resucitado! Entonces, las mujeres volvieron y, en el camino, se encontraron con Cristo Resucitado, quien reiteró el mensaje: “No tengan miedo”. Ve y dile a mis hermanos que vayan a Galilea, y ellos me verán “. Por supuesto, estos dos testigos fueron a informar esto a sus homólogos masculinos. Los discípulos regresan a Galilea y allí se encontraron con Jesús.

Entre el testimonio de las mujeres y el viaje a Galilea, la narración se divide en los versículos 11-15 que proporcionan un contexto importante de la Resurrección: el clima político ambiental del Imperio y la Resistencia judía. El pasaje aborda la cuestión del “real politik”. El Imperio destruirá a todas las personas si los que están en el poder supieran que Dios mismo ha intervenido en nombre de la Resistencia, por lo tanto, el conocimiento de la Resurrección debería ser suprimido. (n.b., verso 17), “Cuando lo vieron, adoraron, pero dudaron”. La duda no era sobre el hecho de la resurrección de Jesús, sino más bien sobre la duda dentro de sí mismos. ¿Tendrían los discípulos la fuerza para enfrentarse al Imperio? ¿Podrían bautizar a la gente en la ética de la inclusión radical y la justicia económica en el nombre de Jesús como el Cristo? ¿Podrían los discípulos soportar su mismo destino? (Que es calvario).

Los discípulos solo adoraron a Jesús como el primero porque no estaban seguros de si podrían hacer algo más que simplemente permanecer en la ensoñación sobre la presencia de Jesús en medio de ellos. Jesús tuvo que romper esta línea de pensamiento. Su respuesta a su duda: “Todo el poder en el cielo y en la tierra me ha sido dado. Id, pues, y haced discípulos a todas las naciones, bautizándolos en el nombre del Padre, y del Hijo, y del Espíritu Santo, enseñándoles a guardar todo lo que yo os he mandado. Y he aquí, yo estoy con vosotros todos los días, hasta el fin del mundo “.  Jesús los estaba separando de una espiritualidad de adoración privatizada en una espiritualidad de compromiso colectivo con el mundo.

Leer el pasaje de hoy a través de la perspectiva de la Resistance nos da una comprensión más profunda del poder de la Gran Comisión. Aunque este pasaje se utiliza con frecuencia como texto para la Liturgia del Bautismo, el énfasis no está en la iniciación o la membresía de la Iglesia, sino en la misión. Este texto también se usó como “texto de prueba” para explicar la Santísima Trinidad. Jesús relacionó la Gran Comisión con el Padre, el Hijo y el Espíritu Santo para subrayar la Gran Comisión y no hacer una declaración teológica acerca de Dios. Jesús-como-Cristo oró y el objeto de su oración fue para el Padre. La relación de Jesús como el Cristo con el Padre fue una relación inmediata, afectuosa y profundamente personal. Dios el Padre no era un concepto abstracto. Al no usar las referencias más tradicionales a Dios como, El Santo Nombre, El Eterno, El Misericordioso, etc., Jesús eligió un título que era verdaderamente escalable para la experiencia humana: un padre amoroso. En ediciones anteriores del Communique, hemos explorado la relación de Jesús como el Cristo en referencia al Espíritu Santo. El Espíritu, Ruach, es literalmente “aliento” según el hebreo. En el Evangelio de Mateo, Ruach condujo a Jesús desde las aguas de su bautismo al desierto, y así también Ruach guiará a los discípulos hacia el futuro desconocido. Debe quedar claro que la referencia trinitaria en el versículo 19 no puede usarse como “prueba” de un dogma acerca de Dios que aún no se había formalizado durante otros 300 años. Habiendo dicho eso, es fundamentalmente importante que los cristianos entiendan sobre la naturaleza del Dios que adoran y cómo su relación con la persona de Jesús forma una comprensión de cómo ellos, como creyentes, deberían actuar en el mundo que los rodea. La buena teología da forma a nuestra práctica cristiana y sostiene nuestra misión en el mundo. Resultados teológicos distorsionados en el caos social y político.

Pasamos ahora a la segunda parte de la reflexión de esta semana: el problema de leer los Evangelios (específicamente este pasaje) con una lente ahistórica y no crítica. Los herejes de finales del siglo II y mediados del siglo III eran cristianos no judíos que tenían dificultades para entender “La Palabra se hizo carne”. No podemos decir que estos cristianos de lengua griega no estaban familiarizados con el concepto de la Encarnación porque muchas religiones paganas tenían mitologías de deidades en carne humana o ser mitad humano / mitad deidad. El problema con los cristianos de habla griega era que tenían una comprensión incompleta de la relación intrínseca entre Jesús como persona humana y Jesús como judío.

A medida que el cristianismo se alejaba cada vez más de su contexto social judío original, los no judíos y aquellos que no tenían contacto con el judaísmo no entendían las referencias judías en las narraciones del evangelio. Los puntos de referencia judíos (más o menos categorizados) son: la teología de Dios (incluyendo el juicio final y la vida después de la muerte, y la gente); teoría social (la ética de cuidar a la comunidad y sanar el mundo), historia y sociedad (cómo llegó a ser el pueblo judío y quiénes eran en relación con otras comunidades a su alrededor) y espiritualidad (una amplia variedad de preocupaciones con respecto a la oración , liturgia y estar presente a Dios). Estos cuatro puntos de referencia proporcionaron numerosos matices invaluables que ayudaron a los primeros cristianos a comprender las realidades duales de Jesús: que Jesús era completamente humano y totalmente divino. Perder el contexto judío del cristianismo y no tener contacto social con los judíos permitió a los cristianos ver que el judaísmo era simplemente el precursor del cristianismo. Las Escrituras hebreas fueron usadas como “textos de prueba” para el nacimiento, la vida y la muerte de Jesús, y así el judaísmo llegó a ser visto como una religión redundante que fue reemplazada por el cristianismo. Esto se llama “supersessionism”

Enraizado en una lectura errónea de los evangelios, el supersesionismo es una teología del reemplazo en la que el cristianismo se convierte en la religión nueva y mejorada, haciendo que la religión judía sea irrelevante y el pueblo judío pérfido y obstinado. El evangelista Mateo crea un paralelo entre Jesús y Moisés y muchos eruditos cristianos mal informados interpretaron la tipología de Mateo como un evento histórico deseado en el que Jesús toma la identidad como el “Nuevo Moisés” (Jesús da la ley y por lo tanto, Jesús “reemplaza” “Moisés). Los estudiosos que no captaron los matices y las referencias a los antecedentes judíos, llegarían a la conclusión de que Jesús reemplazó a Moisés y por lo tanto a Moisés, y la Torá (y por extensión los Profetas) tienen muy poco que decir a los cristianos, aparte de afirmar colocar en la historia de la salvación. Esta línea de pensamiento tuvo consecuencias nefastas a lo largo de la historia cristiana.

El marco teológico del “re-emplazo” ha proporcionado un pretexto religioso para políticas y acciones antisemitas. Alrededor del siglo IV, poco después el emperador Constantino se “convirtió” al cristianismo y le dio al cristianismo un estatus preferido entre otras religiones en el Imperio Romano. Fue por esta época que el término “Dios asesino” se aplicó a los judíos. Durante este mismo tiempo, Constantino prohibió a los judíos poseer esclavos cristianos o circuncidar a sus esclavos y sus servicios religiosos fueron regulados y las congregaciones de la sinagoga fueron restringidas. Los cristianos tenían prohibido convertirse al judaísmo. En el siglo V, la discriminación empeoró: las sinagogas se destruyeron o se deterioraron, y el compromiso cívico de los judíos se vio restringido incluso más que en años anteriores. En el siglo XI, los judíos eran perseguidos regularmente y la mitología de los judíos poseía poderes mágicos y tenía un pacto con el diablo que circulaba por el norte de Europa. Se suponía que las cruzadas de los siglos 11 y 12 en Alemania y Francia elevarían a los cristianos, inspirándolos a unirse al esfuerzo de guerra en Tierra Santa para recuperar el territorio que había caído bajo el control de las fuerzas islámicas. En lugar de utilizar el mensaje de Jesús, el clero antisemita instigó a sus congregaciones a eliminar a las poblaciones judías a lo largo del Rin y el Danubio. En los siglos XIII-XV, los judíos fueron asesinados por miles y fueron expulsados de Alemania, Francia, Austria e Inglaterra. Muchos de los expulsados huyeron a Polonia y otras partes de Europa del Este. La retórica antisemita arremetida desde los púlpitos dio lugar a una política antisemita. En los siglos XVIII y XIX, los judíos que habían establecido sus vidas en Rusia y Europa oriental desde hacía siglos, tras haber huido de Europa occidental, se vieron en grave peligro. “Pogroms”, comenzaron ataques sistemáticos violentos contra judíos, sus propiedades y sinagogas. Estos pogroms se extendieron por Rusia, Polonia, Lituania y Ucrania, y sí, la teología del Supersesionismo dio a los monarcas, obispos y clérigos la licencia para llevar a cabo estos actos violentos en el nombre de Jesús.

La larga y horrible historia de los ataques cristianos contra los judíos allanó el camino para el genocidio masivo contra los judíos, el Holocausto. No fue una sorpresa que los cristianos que habían sido bañados en el Supersesionismo durante siglos no vieran ningún conflicto entre su fe cristiana y la aniquilación de los judíos. En 1933, los cristianos de Alemania exigieron que las Escrituras hebreas (el Primer Testamento) fueran arrancadas de la Biblia. Este acto, por supuesto, encendió un movimiento de resistencia entre la clase intelectual cristiana y formaron una “Iglesia confesante” que afirmó que Cristo, no el Führer, era el jefe de la iglesia. Tristemente, la Iglesia Confesante atrajo a solo el 20% de los pastores alemanes. Solo después del final de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, la mayoría de los teólogos cristianos europeos comenzaron a re-evaluar la teología del Supersesionismo. Echaron una mirada larga y seria a la Iglesia confesante, a los Estudios ecuménicos y al diálogo inter-religioso. Desde la década de 1960 en adelante, los cristianos, dirigidos por la Iglesia Católica, comenzaron a cambiar su marco teológico Supersesionista a una lectura más matizada de los Evangelios y las cartas de San Pablo. Hoy el diálogo judío y cristiano es vibrante y no violento; sin embargo, en los últimos años, las iglesias y seminarios blancos evangélicos han visto un resurgimiento del pensamiento Supersesionista y el Southern Poverty Law Center ha informado que varias iglesias Supremacistas Blancas han surgido utilizando lenguaje antisemita y anti-islámico, pidiendo una purga de América. Los incidentes antisemitas, según la Liga Anti-Difamación, han aumentado un 60% entre 2016-2017. Parece como si diéramos un paso atrás en el progreso interreligioso.

La solución para extraer el antisemitismo de nuestra vida académica y espiritual requiere: una exposición positiva y constante al pueblo judío, la teología judía y la espiritualidad judía, así como un riguroso compromiso con la erudición de las Escrituras que no trate las Escrituras hebreas como una mera “prueba” texto “para Jesús. Como cristianos, debemos reafirmar el dogma de la Santísima Trinidad porque el dogma de la Trinidad nos sirve para entender a Dios en la narrativa de la historia de la salvación que no puede separarse de la historia de la gente judía. Y, por último, debemos comprometernos a desafiar a otros “cristianos” que continúan hablando de los judíos y otras religiones de una manera inferior.
