Sunday Reflection: Resistance Through Forgiveness
Today we celebrate Pentecost and this reflection will focus on  John 20: 19-23.  Our Christian Pentecost has its roots in the Jewish festival, “Shavu’ot,” the Festival of Weeks. The Shavu’ot festival began as a harvest festival in which the first fruits of the harvest were brought to the Temple and it also commemorates the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai to the people of Israel. Just as Shavu’ot is 7 weeks (49 days) after Passover, so too the Christian feast of Pentecost is 7 weeks after Easter. For Jews the Festival of Weeks is a time of joyous preparation culminating in a ritual reception of the Torah.  Advent and Lent are universally understood as liturgical periods of preparation; however, Christians typically do not consider the season of Easter as a period of preparation leading up to Pentecost even through the readings and prayers orient believers for the giving of the Holy Spirit.  This reflection will suggest that Christians might benefit from expanding the Resurrection frame of the Easter Season to include a period of preparation for the giving of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.

Let us turn and see the parallels between the giving of the Divine Law to the Jews and the giving of the Spirit to Christians. For Jews, the spiritual frame of Shavu’ot is in the giving of the Torah from God to the people of Israel rather than in the reception of the Torah by the people.  (This is a fundamental distinction that must be made because God gave the people of Israel the Divine Law so that they became a people who existed to be in service to God. Their reception of the Torah is therefore not as important as the fact that God initiated the giving).  God gave the Torah to a specific people. God did not give the Divine Law to a rich, powerful tribe, but rather to a people who withstood the brutality of forced labor and who stood up to the Empire of Egypt and then challenged Pharaoh to let them go free and when Pharaoh refused to give justice, they threw off the shackles of dependence and enslavement and left Egypt for freedom and and while they were in the desert on the way to the Promised Land, they grumbled, cursed, and complained that God had abandoned them.  God did not smite the people, but instead gave them the Torah, even through they did not deserve it. This gracious act of giving the Divine Law was at once a pardon for their hard-heartedness and rebellion. The Torah was — and is — grace.

The disciples of Jesus certainly did not merit receiving the Spirit — recall that they had all but abandoned their leader at Calvary, failed to embrace the testimony of the first witnesses of the Resurrection, instead, hid shaking with fear in a locked room. In a moment of unmerited grace, Jesus-as-the-Risen-Christ, victorious over death, stood in the midst of his disciples and made a proclamation of peace. This proclamation was not simply a greeting, but rather a resounding denunciation of cowardice, betrayal, and fear. Jesus said, “Shalom.”  Saying Shalom in the context of Jesus’ arrest, torture, execution and Resurrection is significant. By proclaiming Shalom, Jesus-as-the Christ stated  that the machinations of the Empire did not kill him and that the Empire was unsuccessful in shutting down the Resistance. In short, Shalom is the proclamation that love wins over hate.

As the Risen Christ pronounced “Shalom,” he showed the fearful disciples his hands and side. The display of the wounds opened the disciples’ minds and in that moment of conscientización, the disciples rejoiced.  They knew that they were seeing the Risen Christ.  These same disciples who abandoned the Crucified Lord, were not confronted by anger, but a profound gesture of reconciliation and an embrace.

Jesus breathed on the disciples — a clear nod to the Genesis reference in the prologue. (“In the beginning was the Word…”) The breath of Jesus is referenced to Ruach, (or “Ruah”),  the Hebrew world meaning, “breath, spirit.” This genesis reference to Ruach not only underscores the timeless, cosmic presence of Jesus-as-the-Christ at the moment of creation, but indicates that Jesus-as-the-Christ has generative powers to create something new. Could it be that John’s theology is informed by ancient mystical rabbis who believed that the Torah pre-existed time and space like in the gospel of John’s prologue, “In the beginning was the Word…”? The sages considered the Torah as the source of life that when received brought forth freedom and goodness.  The disciples believed that through the gift of the Advocate/Paraclete, they were given the power to live truly in freedom. Jesus’ breath, the Ruach, is now their breath. Jesus’ love is now their love. Jesus’ forgiveness is now their forgiveness.

Sages like Rabbi Hillel (active around the first century BCE) summarized the Torah in one sentence, “What is hateful to you, do not to your fellow,” or as one rabbi commented, “The fundamental principle of the Torah is the commandment, ‘Love thy neighbor as thyself’”.  Is it possible that John the Evangelist may have leaned on Jewish sources to enhance the narrative of Christ showing his wounds and breathing on the disciples saying, “Receive the holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained?”  Let us suppose that in our Christian context the giving of the Torah and the giving of the Holy Spirit are not unrelated incidents, but an intentional reference. The pairing of giving the Torah and giving the Spirit might suggest to Christian readers of the John 20:19-21 that God is setting God’s people on the road of new directions. Rather than sending out his disciples with an attitude of “eye for an eye and tooth for tooth,” Jesus-as-the-Christ bid his disciples to choose love and mercy instead.  Just as God set in motion a new beginning for the People Israel with the giving of the Divine Law,  Jesus set in motion a new beginning through the gift of the Holy Spirit to the disciples.  As we move forward in the Resistance today, we may be tempted to take on the Empire using the same attitude and tools of violence that the Empire uses, but if we do engage with others by dehumanizing them or exploiting them, we merely perpetuate its cycle of violence. If, on the other hand, we take on the Empire with forgiveness and mercy, we will break the cycle and the Empire will end.  We will confound our enemies with a sincere desire for reconciliation and we will defeat tyrants using strategies of mercy.  In an age of profound hatred of immigrants, refugees and racial and sexual minorities, we can see that the application of this Resistance interpretation might yield profound insight in how we might move forward in confronting the Empire.  We can engage in tit-for-tat or we can become the people that God has called us to be: people in service to one another.

Hoy celebramos Pentecostés y esta reflexión enfocará en Juan 20: 19-23. Nuestro Pentecostés cristiano tiene sus raíces en el festival judío, “Shavu’ot”, el Festival de las Semanas. El festival de Shavu’ot comenzó como una fiesta de la cosecha en la cual los primeros frutos de la cosecha fueron llevados al Templo y también conmemora la entrega de la Torá en el Monte Sinaí al pueblo de Israel. Así como Shavu’ot tiene 7 semanas (49 días) después de la Pascua de los judíos, así también la fiesta cristiana de Pentecostés es 7 semanas después de la Pascua de los cristianos. Para los judíos, el Festival de las Semanas es un momento de alegre preparación que culmina en una recepción ritual de la Torá. El Adviento y la Cuaresma son universalmente entendidos como períodos litúrgicos de preparación; sin embargo, los cristianos generalmente no consideran la temporada de Pascua como un período de preparación que conduce a Pentecostés, incluso a través de las lecturas y oraciones orientadas a los creyentes para la entrega del Espíritu Santo. En un momento de gracia inmerecida, Jesús-como-el-Cristo resucitado, victorioso sobre la muerte, se puso en medio de sus discípulos e hizo una proclamación de paz. Esta proclamación no fue simplemente un saludo, sino más bien una denuncia rotunda de cobardía, traición y miedo. Jesús dijo: “Shalom”. Decir Shalom en el contexto del arresto, tortura, ejecución y resurrección de Jesús es significativo. Al proclamar a Shalom, Jesús como el Cristo declaró que las maquinaciones del Imperio no lo mataron y que el Imperio no tuvo éxito en cerrar la Resistencia. En resumen, Shalom es la proclamación de que el amor gana sobre el odio.

Cuando el Cristo resucitado pronunció “Shalom”, les mostró a los discípulos temerosos sus manos y su costado. La exhibición de las heridas abrió las mentes de los discípulos y en ese momento de concientización, los discípulos se regocijaron. Sabían que estaban viendo a Cristo Resucitado. Estos mismos discípulos que abandonaron al Señor Crucificado no se enfrentaron a la ira, sino a un profundo gesto de reconciliación y abrazo.

Jesús sopló sobre los discípulos, un claro guiño a la referencia de Génesis en el prólogo. (“En el principio era la Palabra …”) El aliento de Jesús se refiere a Ruach, (o “Ruah”), el significado hebreo del mundo, “aliento, espíritu”. Esta referencia de génesis a Ruach no solo subraya lo atemporal, cósmico presencia de Jesús como el Cristo en el momento de la creación, pero indica que Jesús-como-Cristo tiene poderes generadores para crear algo nuevo. ¿Podría ser que la teología de Juan es informada por antiguos rabinos místicos que creían que la Torá preexistía el tiempo y el espacio como en el evangelio del prólogo de Juan, “En el principio era la Palabra …”? Los sabios consideraban a la Torá como la fuente de vida que, cuando se la recibía, producía libertad y bondad. Los discípulos creyeron que a través del don del Abogado / Parácleto, se les dio el poder de vivir verdaderamente en libertad. El aliento de Jesús, el Ruach, es ahora su aliento. El amor de Jesús ahora es su amor. El perdón de Jesús ahora es su perdón.
 
Sabios como el rabino Hillel (activo alrededor del siglo I AC) resumieron la Torá en una oración, “Lo que es odioso para ti, no lo hagas a tu prójimo”, o como comentó un rabino: “El principio fundamental de la Torá es el mandamiento, “Ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo”. ¿Es posible que Juan el Evangelista se haya apoyado en fuentes judías para realzar la narración de Cristo mostrando sus heridas y respirándole a los discípulos diciendo: “Reciban el Espíritu Santo, cuyos pecados ustedes perdonan son perdonados”. ¿Y de quién son los pecados que retiene? “Supongamos que en nuestro contexto cristiano la entrega de la Torá y la entrega del Espíritu Santo no son incidentes no relacionados, sino una referencia intencional. La combinación de dar la Torá y dar la El Espíritu podría sugerir a los lectores cristianos de Juan 20: 19-21 que Dios está colocando al pueblo de Dios en el camino de nuevas direcciones, en lugar de enviar a sus discípulos con una actitud de “ojo por ojo y diente por diente”, Jesus-como-el-Cristo pidió a sus discípulos que escogieran amor y misericordia en su lugar. Así como Dios puso en marcha un nuevo comienzo para el Pueblo de Israel con la entrega de la Ley Divina, Jesús puso en marcha un nuevo comienzo a través del don del Espíritu Santo a los discípulos. A medida que avanzamos en la Resistencia hoy, podemos sentirnos tentados de enfrentarnos al Imperio usando la misma actitud y las mismas herramientas de violencia que usa el Imperio, pero si nos relacionamos con otros deshumanizándolos o explotándolos, simplemente perpetuamos su ciclo de violencia. Si, por otro lado, asumimos el Imperio con perdón y misericordia, romperemos el ciclo y el Imperio terminará. Confundiremos a nuestros enemigos con un sincero deseo de reconciliación y derrotaremos a los tiranos usando estrategias de misericordia. En una clima política de profundo odio hacia los inmigrantes, los refugiados y las minorías raciales y sexuales, podemos ver que la aplicación de esta interpretación de la Resistencia puede arrojar una profunda percepción de cómo podemos avanzar para enfrentar al Imperio. Podemos comprometernos con el ojo por ojo o podemos convertirnos en las personas que Dios nos ha llamado a ser: personas al servicio de los demás.
