Sunday Reflection: True Love
Today’s gospel passage from John 15 contains one of the most well-known quotes of Jesus, “This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” In this brief (but packed), discourse Jesus underscores his teachings on love — true love — that “to love” another is to enter into a relationship of mutuality. The Gospel of John is theologically organized around the foundational concept of the Incarnation: God became FLESH and dwelt with the human family experiencing the fullness of the human experience in all things but sin. In John’s gospel when Jesus came onto the scene, Jesus was in full possession of his identity as the Son of God, though he did not disclose his identity to those around him.

Jesus’ first act was gathering disciples with the invitation, “Come, and you will see.” Jesus initiated a relationship built on an “encuentro,” that is, an experience of mutual disclosure. Discipleship was not something that was “taught,” but rather, something that was lived in the context of being in relationship with others. The desire of relationship is the root of the Incarnation. In verse 3 of the first chapter the evangelist wrote, “All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be. What came to be through him was life, and this life was the light of the human race; the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

In resistance theology, darkness is social disintegration. The foundational statement of John’s gospel is that creation was born from a relationship the Word Incarnate. The relationship between the Word and human bings cannot be overcome by the darkness brought on by racial, ethnic, religious and national hatred or the exploitation of vulnerable persons. Salvation, then, is the process of brining people back into relationship with one another through the Word Incarnate. Jesus as the Christ shone in the darkness of oppression as a beacon of hope assuring those who dwelt in darkness that the darkness of oppression and injustice will be defeated.

The doctrine of LOVE is rooted in overcoming death. Jesus came to bring life and to give it in abundance. The Empire, on the other hand, was — and is — about taking away life. The Empire makes people feel that they have much to lose and thus it does what it can to gin up fear. For example, the Roman Empire used ethnic and religious tension to sew tension and create division in the community. The Empire made people feel that their foreign neighbors were going to take their land and they made them feel that their non-Jewish neighbors were going to rob them of their cultural identity and political power. Jesus’ response to the Empire was to empower his disciples to overcome the human tendency of self-preservation and begin to connect with others. The Empire wanted people to live in isolation from one an other because it would be easier to keep people from taking on the responsibility for caring for their neighbor. This promoted a political system where only the clever and deceptive, power-hungry obsequious functionaries survived. Those who chose to raise their voice against the exploitation of the poor were crucified.

The doctrine of love is not built on a power structure of slave and free persons, but of mutuality. “I no longer call you slaves…” The comprehensive reordering of social relationships is fundamental to the doctrine of love. Just as Jesus loved the Samaritan woman with several husbands whom everyone else shunned, the man born blind begging at the public pool that was rejected even by his parents, and the untouchable lepers, so too his disciples must learn to love unselfishly and without regard to what others might think. Jesus taught that the greatest form of love is self-sacrifice which is the utter rejection of the Empire’s hold on any single person. When disciples are willing to stand up to the Empire with love, then the Empire will have lost its grip over the people. Jesus knew that the darkness of racial, economic and nationalist divisions could not be sustained when the subversive doctrine of love penetrated the core of the Empire.

The hateful anti-immigrant rhetoric that we hear blasting from Michigan and amplified on Fox News must be responded to with love. The dog whistle politics that cast Black and Brown people as dangerous criminals must be responded to with love. The public shaming of transgender service men and women must be responded to with love. The darkness of separation is not sustainable if enough people stand up and speak out. Silence is no longer an option. Jesus taught that through love, we dispel the darkness and that love must always have a liberating dimension. When we love, we will “bear fruit that will remain.” The fruit of equality and respect. The fruit of appreciation of diversity. The fruit of racial healing. And the fruit of living in a community that is not organized by fear, but rather, by love.

Weekly Intercessions
Two African American men were arrested in a Philadelphia Starbucks store last month for “loitering” on the property. The men were waiting for a their friend to arrive before they were going to order their coffee. Their arrest went viral on social media sparking a national outrage. In the days following Starbucks arranged to close 8,000 of their stores for racial-bias training. The two men arrived at a settlement with Starbucks, a symbolic $1 each from the City of Philadelphia and a promise a $200,000 public high school program for young entrepreneurs. The Philadelphia Starbucks episode was the latest of thousands of racially biased incidents that happen every day in our country. Racially biased incidents happen in schools, on airplanes, in churches, and shopping malls. Several independent studies confirm what people of color have known all their lives: people are treated differently based on their racial appearance. When racial bias shows up in our educational systems we see Black and Brown children expelled in far higher rates than their non-Black, non-Brown fellow students. When racial bias shows up in police matters an unarmed Black or Brown person is killed by police who thought that the individual was carrying a weapon. Racially biased incidents are not isolated incidents that happen in Starbucks, our school system or with the police. These incidents are symptoms of a deeply seated social problem that permeates our American life. All of us participate in a deeply flawed society and therefore, we cannot point the finger at Starbucks, a superintendent or the police without pointing a finger at ourselves. We must realize that managers at Starbucks, school teachers and police officers are people who live in our communities and their racial biases were not taught to them as one would teach geometry. Biases are acquired by being a part of a community: buying into the community’s values and participating in its activities. Let us pray that we pay more attention to our actions and attitudes regarding how we see people of a different race or ethnicity than ourselves and take the time to decide on how we might act on our feelings. Let us be WOKE.

Dos hombres afroamericanos fueron arrestados en una tienda de Starbucks en Filadelfia el mes pasado por “holgazanear” en la propiedad. Reflexión del domingo: El Amor Verdadero
El pasaje del evangelio de hoy de Juan 15 contiene una de las citas más conocidas de Jesús: “Este es mi mandamiento: ámense los unos a los otros como yo los amo. Nadie tiene mayor amor que este, para dar la vida por sus amigos”. En este breve (pero apretado) discurso, Jesús subraya sus enseñanzas sobre el amor, el amor verdadero, que “amar” a otro es entrar en una relación de reciprocidad. El Evangelio de Juan está organizado teológicamente en torno al concepto fundacional de la Encarnación: Dios se hizo carne y vivió con la familia humana compartido plenamente en nuestra humanidad en todas las cosas, pero no el pecado. En el evangelio de Juan cuando Jesús vino, Jesús estaba en plena posesión de su identidad como el Hijo de Dios, aunque no reveló su identidad a los que lo rodean.

El primer acto de Jesús fue reunir discípulos con la invitación: “Vengan y verán”. Jesús inició una relación basada en un “encuentro”, es decir, una experiencia de revelación mutua. El discipulado no era algo que se “enseñaba”, sino algo que se vivía en el contexto de estar en relación con los demás. El deseo de relación es la raíz de la Encarnación. En el versículo 3 del primer capítulo, el evangelista escribió: “Todas las cosas se hicieron por medio de él, y sin él nada se hizo. Lo que vino a ser a través de él fue la vida, y esta vida fue la luz de la raza humana; la luz brilla en la oscuridad, y la oscuridad no la ha superado “.

En la teología de la resistencia, la oscuridad es la desintegración social. La declaración fundamental del evangelio de Juan es que la creación nació de una relación del Verbo Encarnado. La relación entre la Verbo Encarnado y los seres humanos no puede ser superada por la oscuridad provocada por el odio racial, étnico, religioso y nacional o la explotación de personas vulnerables. La salvación, entonces, es el proceso de llevar a las personas a una relación recíproca a través del Verbo Encarnado. Jesús como el Cristo brilló en la oscuridad de la opresión como un faro de esperanza que asegura a los que habitan en la oscuridad que la oscuridad de la opresión y la injusticia será derrotada.

La doctrina del AMOR tiene sus raíces en de vencer la muerte. Jesús vino a traer vida y a darla en abundancia. El Imperio, por otro lado, estaba y está a punto de quitarle la vida. El Imperio hace que las personas sientan que tienen mucho que perder y, por lo tanto, hace lo que puede para aumentar el miedo. Por ejemplo, el Imperio Romano usó la tensión étnica y religiosa para coser la tensión y crear división en la comunidad. El Imperio hizo que las personas sintieran que sus vecinos extranjeros iban a tomar sus tierras y les hizo sentir que sus vecinos no judíos iban a robarles su identidad cultural y poder político. La respuesta de Jesús al Imperio fue capacitar a sus discípulos para superar la tendencia humana de la auto-preservación y comenzar a hermanar con los demás. El Imperio quería que las personas vivieran aisladas unas de otras porque sería más fácil evitar que la gente asumiera la responsabilidad de cuidar a su vecino. Esto promovió un sistema político donde solo sobrevivieron los hábiles y engañosos funcionarios obsequiosos sedientos de poder. Aquellos que eligen levantar su voz en contra de la explotación de los pobres fueron crucificados.

La doctrina del amor no está construida sobre una estructura de poder basada en esclavitud, sino de una sistema de respecto integral y mutualidad interpersonal. “Ya no los llamo esclavos …” La reordenación integral de las relaciones sociales es fundamental para la doctrina del amor. Así como Jesús amó a la mujer samaritana con varios maridos cuales todos los demás rechazado, el hombre nacido ciego rogando en la piscina pública que fue rechazada incluso por sus padres, y los leprosos intocables, así también sus discípulos deben aprender a amar desinteresadamente y sin tener en cuenta lo que otros puedan pensar Jesús enseñó que la mayor forma de amor es el sacrificio propio, que es el rechazo total del dominio del Imperio sobre cualquier persona. Cuando los discípulos estén dispuestos a enfrentarse al Imperio con amor, entonces el Imperio habrá perdido su control sobre la gente. Jesús sabía que la oscuridad de las divisiones raciales, económicas y nacionalistas no podía sostenerse cuando la doctrina subversiva del amor penetraba en el núcleo del Imperio.

La aborrecible retórica anti-inmigrante que escuchamos voladuras desde Michigan y amplificada en Fox News debe responderse con amor. La política del silbato de perros que arroja a las personas negras y marrones como criminales peligrosos debe responderse con amor. La humillación pública de hombres y mujeres del servicio transgénero debe responderse con amor. La oscuridad de la separación no es sostenible si suficientes personas se ponen de pie y hablan. El silencio ya no es una opción. Jesús enseñó que a través del amor, disipamos la oscuridad y que el amor siempre debe tener una dimensión liberadora. Cuando amamos, “llevaremos fruto que permanecerá”. El fruto de la igualdad y el respeto. El fruto de la apreciación de la diversidad. El fruto de la curación racial. Y el fruto de vivir en una comunidad que no está organizada por el miedo, sino por el amor.

Grupo Solidaridad is supporting PACT and PICO California’s signature gathering for the “Schools and Communities First” Initiative. We need signatures and people to help gather signatures of registered voters!

The California Schools and Local Communities Funding Act will restore over $11 billion per year to California’s schools, community colleges, health clinics, and other vital local services.

We can no longer afford to keep giving billions of dollars in tax breaks to millionaires, billionaires and big corporations. Closing California’s commercial property tax loophole restores $11 billion for schools, community colleges and other vital community services, including emergency responder services, parks, libraries, health clinics, trauma centers, affordable housing, homeless services, and roads.

Join the League of Women Voters of California, PICO California, California Calls, Advancement Project California, Evolve California, Common Sense Kids Action, Alliance San Diego, the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of California (CHIRLA) and the California Federation of Teachers to fund California schools by closing the Corporate Property Tax Loophole in Proposition 13 while continuing to guarantee protections for homeowners, residential renters, agricultural land, and small businesses.

Parish Engagement Voter Registration Drive!

Members of Grupo Solidaridad are traveling to the Central Valley to register people to vote. This work is important because people of color and Latino families are under-engaged in the electoral process in areas where nativist, racist and anti-immigrant politics dominate the political landscape and supporters of social justice are the minority. By volunteering to help the leaders in the Central Valley register voters, we magnify their work. The combined efforts of Grupo and Central Valley leaders has given a real boost to the voter registration drives in traditionally “Red” districts. We believe that when the diversity in the electorate increases, the electorate will broaden the political and social agenda of the district. Last weekend Grupo members held 160 meaningful conversations about the importance of participating in democracy and supporting candidates and measures that reflect the social justice values. These conversations will hopefully bear fruit in voter turnout. The grupo also registered 20 new voters who are motivated to vote and get engaged in the Resistance Movement!
